Now I'm a fan of open-ended "exploration" (edit: the GTA's, Mercenaries, etc.) type games, but an hour real time to go from one place to another is just retarded.

There are faster means of transportation. There always is. You just have to find it.
Teleportation has always been a common Exile / Avernum theme. :whistling:
Exile and Avernum are huge. They always have been. Exile III Ruined World was one of those games that you could easily spend six months playing a single game with a single party of adventurers. Sure, you can finish the whole game in a day, but you miss 80% of it if you rush. In some of the Exile / Avernum series, some dungeons became visible only when it was a certain in game month. So you have to waste some time waiting for days, even months to pass. But while you waited, the world died. Plagues became worse. There was a real sense of time and urgency. As you stood around and picked your nose, cities became seiged, and if you kept waiting, people would die. Towns would be destroyed. And the game became harder and harder.
There is a lot involved in these games. You should try them. Beware, you will look at the clock and realise that it is 4 am in the morning and you will wonder where the time went.
All alone, or in twos,
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall.
Some hand in hand
And some gathered together in bands.
The bleeding hearts and artists
Make their stand.
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad buggers wall.
"Isn't this where...."
