Switching weapons to bare hands?

I need to know how come a paladin at lvl 76 can kill Hell ancients so easily?He joined my game and helped me.that was very kind of him but when i saw that he was switching from shield and weapon to no weapons at all and i could hear he was using smith but his character's hand wasnt holding anything...i was amazed..Could someone kindly enlighten me on that?
