What would actually make more sense, to me, is a "hack" or whatever that made people STAY squelched once you squelched them, instead of unsquelching every time you or they log off/change chars.

For someone who tends to be quick on the squelch button (again like yours truly), that would quickly reduce the spam torrent to a mere trickle without potientially cutting off genuine conversation. At the same time, it eliminates the thousands of ways to get around string-based filters.
