A question about payment and taking a break

Assume one do play the game. Can one put the account on hold is say one can't play for the next month or two? Or will it then be deleted? Does that mean as soon as you don't play/pay for a month, you lose your characters?

As I understand it, you won't be able to play, but you won't lose your characters
