I play hardcore because I think I'm better than everyone.
Well, actualy I play both but I prefer hardcore. I think death should actualy mean something. Yes, crap happens. But that's life! I mean, if you die in softcore, all you have lost is some gold and experience. Sure, it's a lot of exp at higher levels, but to me that's not a big deal- nothing compared to losing your whole character. I think the threat of losing everything makes me play better and also encourages people to work together. (Not always though) Which is why I enjoyed hardcore a lot when 1.10 first came out. Before all the uber l33t soloers came out to be.
Another reason is that I don't play characters for that long. After a certain point, I'll start a new character anyways. I'll continue to optimize my existing characters, but that's about it. I'm also one to mule up items and magic find so if one of my characters should hit the dust, I'll be putting my muled items to use faster. It's sort of a inheritance trove. I've only lost one character, and that was just some random level 13 character that I screwed up on. I decided to use him as a guniea pig for some dueler.
Of course, if you have a crappy connection, softcore is recomended. I would play that when my connection acts up. :Sometimes I play hardcore with an unstable connection just to be really "hardcore"* :)

With great power comes the great need to blame other people.
