There is also the "lottery ticket" factor to consider. If you want a particular unique, and have money to burn (i.e. there is no utility to the gold you have, to speak of), then it may make sense to throw some money down that hole. I believe a lot of money would get thrown down that hole, despite the 1/5000, if there were a more favorable "cash & carry" environment (i.e. if you weren't limited in how much gold you can carry, and people could "wire transfer" money & goods more easily, facilitating trade--an interesting bit related to this is: The Gaming Open Market ).
