Some controversial reads at that time I remember were; Catcher in the Rye, Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, A Farewell to Arms, Flowers for Algernon, Go Ask Alice, Lord of the Flies, Mein Kampf, Of Mice and Men, Slaughterhouse Five, To Kill a Mockingbird, Ulysses, and others...

Several of these were required reading in my Freshman through Senior English classes (Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, along with Uncle Tom's Cabin and Animal Farm). English is where we did most of the essays and such in HS for me. We did have some in World History, US History, Washington state History, and a lot more in the Civics class as a Senior.
