I've adopted a new policy that may not help with emails but it's helped me with some other stuff.
If it's after 11pm or if I've been drinking I can not hit send / submit on a message unless I read it out loud first. I've awoken a few times to see an unsent message on my phone or an IM client or elsewhere that I'm really glad I didn't send. Since like most people I have a lot more natural filters when audibly speaking than I do when typing, even if I'm overly tired or in some state of inebriation, it often makes me realize just how off putting or ill advised what I'm writing is.
This isn't for everyone, and I realize you weren't asking for advice, but it felt relevant and it may help you develop a strategy that works for you.
