I always felt Diablo 1 was better than Diablo 2 because with Diablo 1 I felt a sense of community within the legit crowd. When Diablo 2 came along, even friends from Diablo 1 drifted apart, and everything became entirely about loot. With Diablo 1, sure, I spent plenty of time massacring mobs and hoping for a high stat obsidian zodiac ring, but I also enjoyed the community, not only in Sorcerers Tower but in legit games. The necessity to cooperate and to have a great deal of skill in certain mods made things even better.
Diablo 2, however, I always felt alone, even when I was playing with others. There was no comradery. There was no need to play with skilled players because there was little need for skill. Rarely was there an incentive to actually cooperate unless early in the game or if you were doing boss runs over and over again - otherwise it was usually better to solo for more experience.
WoW was a great improvement: still a loot hunt, but focusing on skill and cooperation, with complex team dynamics. Tanking in WoW provided unique leadership opportunities, and the community was wonderful.
I can only hope that Diablo 3 allows for a sense of community that Diablo 2 did not.
Admittedly I haven't followed Diablo 3 at all, but if they don't have guilds I don't really see the point in playing.
