As to the rest of your argument, maybe so, maybe no. However, without the incentives and rebates, solar looks pretty poor for my area.

Just like central air, or on demand hot water, if solar power is a plus, then it increases the value of the home. So, it doesn't lock the original owners in, it simply increases the value (or price). So do granite counters and wood floors and people install them all the time.
