The socket 1366 should be around for quite sometime, so it's not a bad idea to get a really good motherboard that can push a possible FSB of 2GHz.

I know once Windows 7 comes out in October I'm going to build a new machine using i7 at it's heart.

As to memory, right now you should be fine with 3 G, you can go with more if you plan on going with 64bit and really need it.
