Players got banned for using a coin with a conjuction with a keyboard. Neither coins nor keyboards are restricted objects, yet sticking one into one of your movement keys in Alterac Valley will probably get you at least a warning.
As we have seen before, Blizzard is not really against addons and 3rd party programs, but rather against actions that conflict with their "vision" of the game, whether they involve a complex keylogger or a simple coin.
Now, I might not agree with their "vision" or their methods, but that is why the ban will stay permanent. This has nothing to do with Linux, but the player simply should have been a bit smarter as to how they have used the macro feature of their keyboard. Yes, it's a shame, but it is not surprising in the bit.
