Who do you tip?

Me:

Pizza guy
Any and all restaurants (excluding fast food)
Barber (THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT!)
Bartender
Coat check girl

I'm sure there are a few categories I'm forgetting right now.

I tip at restaurants and I tip my bartender. I don't tip my hair stylist, as they're charging a fortune as it is. (roughly $60)

I would tip a pizza delivery person if I got my pizza delivered.

I tip at restaurants where there is a server. If I am picking up at a fast food restaurant, I don't. But I do tip at the local coffee shop.

Bartenders get an automatic tip, as do those who actually bring me a drink when in an establishment that serves alcohol.

Coat check person gets a tip.

However, on hair cuts, I don't. I reckon I am paying for the cost of this service in the price quoted. Perhaps if I was not a regular customer (there are six of us in this family who all go to the same person) and I was getting a cut in a hotel lobby when travelling, I would behave differently.

And, lastly, in those resorts that purport to be 'all-inclusive' the server who looks after you all week deserves a tip at the end of the week. Theoretically they are paid extra to make up for the lack of tip opportunity, but that is seldom really the case. Edit: And if you take your children with you to such a resort, do remember to tip the long-suffering people who fed them and looked after them for you! They deserve at least double whatever you tip the server for your table. *

* My eldest worked at such a resort one summer, and discovered that he and his partner in the children's area were usually ignored when tip time came. And when they did get a tip, it was usually a fraction of what the servers at the 'adult' tables got. This was grossly unfair, considering how behaviour at the adult tables was generally a lot more civil than that at the children's table. There was less clean-up, less crying at the table, less sibling warfare and definitely less "I want my mommy" even when Mommy had indicated that she was not to be disturbed.

Cows.
All alone, or in twos,
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall.
Some hand in hand
And some gathered together in bands.
The bleeding hearts and artists
Make their stand.

And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall, after all it's not easy
Banging your heart against some mad buggers wall.

For extended service (maid service in hotels, assigned cab, etc.) I find it best to either tip 'as you go' or a small tip up front with a promise of more if the service warrents it. This usually results in better care and service for the stay.

As to who to tip and how much, there are a lot of good guides online. A brief search brought up this article which is pretty well in agreement with my feelings.

Beyond the ones you cited, I have tipped cab and limo drivers, dealers at the casino, valet or parking attendants, garage mechanic's, and the emergency road side assistance persons.

Well, and I guess a few other service providers I will leave unmentioned, as they were in the line of duty. :)

I was just considering making a post like this one.

Would you tip a Appliance Delivery guys? Why/Why Not? (Ie: Lowe's/Home Depot)

Keep in mind customers already pay a delivery Fee (Ie: 55 Bucks, this includes Delivery, and normal installation of product, except for Water Heater/Dishwashers/Gas Ranges)

Delivery Drivers makes around 10.50-12.00 dollars an hour, Helpers make 8.xx?-9.50 an hour.

Edit: Oh and so you know, tipping for these people "isn't allowed"

Honestly no I wouldn't because of the delivery fee that I am already paying.

Waitress/waiter
Bellhop when I use one.
Baggage handler when I use one (rare) at the airport
Bartender
Barber if I am particularly pleased with the cut (I don't go to a hairdresser, they are too expensive!)
The guy who washes my clubs at the Golf Club on such occasions as I allow for that: I usually wash them myself when I get home, however, on some occasions, we sit in the 19th hole and the lad washes them while we suck down the suds, where we tip the bartender, etc. Can make for an expensive golf outing that is for certain.

And, if I win big, the croupier at the craps table. Usually, if the guy is taking care of me and not trying to tell me how to bet, I will now and again drop a $1 bet for him on a high hitter. Recent vegas trip, I went for a two way 12, one dollar. Twelve rolled, pure luck, and we both got 35 bucks.

A better than usual tip, for sure, though most two way bets like that go south.

I don't really know you, but seeing as you are the last person to post, are female, and are posting in a humorous way...I shall tip you! *dances with the count and tips her*

Of course, while writing this I realize that I know next to nothing about dancing and so don't really know if its called tipping. Oh well, I am sure I'll hear about it one way or the other.

All my helms  are currently in wooden trunks, in storage.

But you may have one of my tams that I on occasion keep my dreadlocks in. Might I recommend the one made out of Alpaca and Llama hair? Tis very very soft. Softer then cashmere.

I'll swap you my navy blue flannel dread hat with the secret inner pocket. (The so-called "drug pocket" but I use it to keep my money and keys safe.)

I have a hat fetish and I like stealing hats from my friends. Not for long, though. ^_^

I overtip when I go to restaurants. My friends are servers and cooks and get treated horribly by customers and staff alike. I also tend to overtip if the server can make me laugh.

I'd do the same as I'd do for a mover -- offer them a cold beer.

It really depends.

If I see a waitress that looks like the overworked single mom type and she's on her last nerve, getting groped, harassed, and getting leftover change for tips, I usually try to fish out what ever spare cash I have. I once tipped a very overworked waitress a hundred bucks. Why? She spilled my coffee. And broke into tears begging me not to complain because she needed the job. She had bruises on her arms, and all the eye makeup in the world couldn't hide her black eyes. This was a bloody long time ago, probably in the 70s. I told her I had no choice to complain, and that she was going to most likely get fired. I told her to get the heck out of town and start over. She did. I still get Christmas cards from her every year.

Snooty bastards get nickles. Snooty arseholes get a tip written on a piece of paper. "Don't eat yellow snow."

I go out of my way to tip those that deserve it. I think I am putting my favourite waitress' kid through college right now at my fave place to eat. She busts her ass to make sure my service is top notch, and usually slips me a few extra chocolate mints. Those Andes mints. She chats with my wife and instead of idle talk, it's meaningful conversation. She knows, with out asking, that when I am wiping my plate with the garlic bread, that it's time to bring the cannoli, my biscotti, and my coffee, just the way "I" like it. And if I raise one finger while she is watching for me to eat my garlic bread, she also brings a quarter of a cherry cheesecake to boot, for those nights when I feel the need to indulge.

I've never seen a cow-tipping. Considered feeding cow hamburgers, but then found out cattle feed already had 10-20% cattle in it... or maybe that was rumour.

Pretty much the same as DeeBye. Add taxi drivers.

And to the people who don't tip their barbers/hair stylists/coiffure technicians: Well, that explains why your hair looks that way.

Bartender, if I were old enough (only about 11 weeks to go!).

Jimmy Johns guy.

Pizza guy.

Waiters/waitresses depending on the attitude.

Hooters girls.

I always tip my barber, I only pay $13 US for a haircut, and I've been going to that barber shop as long as I can remember, probably about 15 years. They know me by name and I sit around ans BS with them every time I come home from Purdue.

Waiters. This will get bigger as I go out on my own and run into more people with "tippable" jobs. I usually leave pretty big tips percentagewisesince I don't go to restaurants much and don't spend much, so have enough money.

Wow, I just can't comprehend this. The thread seems like one of those surreal anachronisms like reading an eighties book on how women should behave in the business place.

So, to get this straight, people give away extra money on top of what they already pay, to some random people they are unlikely ever to have interaction with again?
