He checked everything and then he checked it again. He did his job methodical, professionally, and as safely as it could be done. Given that he was still a young man in the fifties when jet packs were being tested by the military, and that he never got involved with that program, I suspect he wasn't attracted. His one crash was due to a design flaw -- the aircraft he was testing did not have sufficient hydraulic reserves. In spite of that, he came close to saving it anyway.
