If you're trying to play SP with SP characters from a previous install, the problem might be that your current install is an older version. You can't load 1.10 characters in a 1.07 game, for example. SP characters can't. They're restricted to SP games, TCP/IP games and open b.net games. It's absolutely trivial to cheat with SP characters. Having the characters located on the realms server makes it that much harder.
