Orphan's Call - SetBuilder - 03-30-2005 First off, I don't pay attention, so what character(s) is (are) this set designed for? Only thing I know about this set is that it's high level, and that on an individual basis, each item kicks ass. However, I have 3/4 items in the set (or is it 2/3? Think 3/4). And I figure I'll start to build it. Have no idea what this char is about, and hadn't even considered actually building it before. So looking for some help. Any comments appreciated. Most folks I know like two handed throwing for a Barb, so the shield switch would be for special times on Weapons II when you want the shield up for blocking . . . maybe in the Hell Bloody Foothils? Anywhere archers lurk. The shield and Helm strike me as the sweetest of the bunch. My enchant Sorceress had a WG shield, whose blocking made Hell Duriel way less of a problem. The belt hits the "what's not to like" category quickly. I do not suspect that a Spell caster would prefer to use this set, unelss one is trying to boost blocking while wielding a wand or orb type weapon. If you add a Strength or Black rune worded weapon, or indeed any CB weapon, your CB rate gets to "nice" quickly. To hit becomes your major concern. With that hat and Goblin Toe, you could use The Diggler (ITD) for example, and the majority of your damage via CB. Back to Strength and BlackToss in a Goblin Toe boots and you end up with good blocking, CB at the 80%+ level. Sacrifice some resistances in Hell if your rings and Amulet don't come through for you there. Lack of a "cannot be frozen" means that Baal's cold wedge still needs to be accounted for. Maybe charms make up the rest of your resistance needs, or Natural Resistance if you are a Barbarian. The hat on a merc from Act II or V is a very nice boost to mercdom by itself. The IAS, blocking, CB, Deadly Strike, FHR, and defense boosts point to a "slug in out in the mosh pit" approach. :) The MF is lovely, if not über. What is really sacrificed is +skills in the hat and the shield, and to a certain extent, big resistance bonuses. Enjoy. Occhi Orphan's Call - Little Faith - 03-31-2005 Another interesting possibility (if you are up to it) would be a dagger tankazon. (An amazon who only puts points in passive/magic and uses a dagger). With Fleshripper and a pair of Gore riders your Crushing Blow will trigger constantly. Add a good resistance armor (Lionheart or Smoke comes to mind), an Angelic ring/ammy combo and you are set. Orphan's Call - SetBuilder - 03-31-2005 How well do you all think this set would work for a poison-based daggermancer? Orphan's Call - goldfish - 03-31-2005 Occhi, I think that the gloves and helm are a bigger sacrifice than you might be admitting. As a practical matter, most characters assembling this or most other sets -- realms characters twinking, that is, since sets have gotten so much harder to assemble otherwise -- will be able to get some other relatively cheap items including a shako or a tal's mask. This helm is nice, but it doesn't come close to +2skillsfe/mana for a caster or dual 10%leechfe/mana/resists for a fighter. As for the gloves, they're certainly decent, but they're nowhere close to some of the better gloves that are still easy to acquire -- frostburn or magefist for a caster, laying of hands for a fighter. You're right, of course, that this is a fighter's set. But it just doesn't seem like a particularly *good* fighter's set. Orphan's Call - goldfish - 03-31-2005 Also, I seem to have a gift for finding Magnus skin gloves. I think I've got two muled, never used, and I've left at least one more on the ground (I was carrying more important stuff). I think "I ought to mule these because they look useful." But when it comes down to it, I _never_ use them. In contrast, every pair of bloodfist / Sander's gloves / Sigon gloves that I own is in more or less constant use. Some of the runewords out there that just blow things away. Also, CB is great in certain environments. It is not the all purpose wonder killer it was pre LoD. Frankly, a poison based Daggermancer should probably focus more on his poison damage (three part Trang with the shield and gloves for example) and full Orphan's inhibits this. This doesn't mean a daggermancer is totally out of question. Some daggermancers use Poison Dagger more as a source of much needed AR and lets CB/OW/DS do a lot of the work for them with the poison as an added bonus. Such a melee daggermancer could make good use of the Orphan's Call. Continuing with the whole Chrushing Blow theme we could also make a paladin. A fanatic zealot with a high Crushing Blow setup can get off quite a lot of CB's in a very short time. Orphan's Call - ICanChangTheWorLd - 03-31-2005 In my opinion , the item is best fit for Barbarian. :) Orphan's Call - Little Faith - 05-04-2005 Hey I got another possible build: A kickass-assin (Dragon Talon specialist) using it in conjunction with upgraded Gore Riders and a Fleshripper. |
