Spell Damage per Power Charge gives 3% per charge now.

On the cliche/counterculture thing, that is completely a matter of perspective. Ice Spear is the most common spell used on my side of the fence, for example. If you like Ice Spear, that's fine, I recommend Monty's suggestion then. Have an AoE version (I strongly prefer Chain to LMP, YMMV. Stage 2 IS chains are hilarious and profitable) and a single target version. The chain effect seems like it might fit your version of 'reality' also.
If it helps, think of Chaos damage as anti-magic, whereby it ignores any normal magic defense including your energy shield.
