Is there any available solution for playing Diablo 1 with original maps/mechanics at 60fps or is this limited to modded solutions only?

Try the Diablo Zip DDraw fix located here.

Once installed Press ~ in game once you loaded a file to open a menu which should let you select 60.

Also you might need to edit the ini to your desired fullscreen resolution.

Edit: Thought it was the proto zip but its the once called diablo. Same page.

I tried the fix and was unable to detect any change to in-game 'smoothness' vs. mods supporting 60fps and limited to modified content.
