IM Tournament Forming

IM Tourney

You may see some references in the text below that seem a bit confusing, but if you follow the link at the top of the post, they will all become very clear and you will be able to access more detailed information.

Announcing the First (as far as we know) All DSF IronMan Tournament
Sponsors: Sabra & Attika

Divisions: This will be a two division tournament featuring a special training opportunity for those players who are new to Ironman and want to get a leg up.

Two-Person Tournament: Start your game anytime in June and finish whenever.

Three-Person Tournament: beginning in June or July.

Training: No matter how well you play D1, you’ll soon find out that IronMan is not like other games you’ve played. If you can commit to four hours in one or two gaming sessions, we can assign you a Mentor who will take you on a Two Person IM Romp through Church. You’ll get free tips and mentoring from players who know the score. Mentors are WildViking, Thenryb, SoulEdge, Attika & Sabra. (Other qualified players who are interested in mentoring, please read the Mentoring Thread and then post here to volunteer or get more details.)

Objective: Without access to townspeople, take your team from the door of the Church all the way down to Diablo without everyone on the team dying at once. Standard Mage/Warrior/Rogue team compulsory for Three Person. Rogue/Warrior pairing is suggested for two person competition, but the choice of pairings is yours.

Creating a Team: Teams form independently here Find Your Partner and announce here We've Got Teams stating the players/characters who will be teaming and in what division. Teams set their own match times. Playing in all both divisions is acceptable.

Many thanks to our mentors for volunteering their time and especially to Jim who will be setting up our tournament tracking web site.

If you would like to test your skills against the ultimate D1 challenge . . . here's your chance.

We hope that all will participate and we'll see you on b.net.

Hail Sabra,

Sounds good: I'll be interested to see how it pans out :) I'd love to join in myself, but my inability to play online prevent that; I am sure I would be the worst anyways :P

Please to post here the final results though: I would LOVE to see them :D

Hi, Elric:

How come you can't play on line? That's a bummer! Anyway, you couldn't be the worst, because I'll be the worst. ;)

Hail Sabra,

Firewalls and a HTTPS proxy; with all UDP ports closed, it is quite impossible to play Diablo online. It should technically be possible to get Diablo II working online, with some work-arounds, but I've never had any luck with that tile. I used to be able to chat with Diablo, but after the last patch the game started to crash when I would try.

Perhaps we should have a duel then: first to lose, wins ;) Actually, I can usually make it to the Cats, and have reached the Caves on several occations, but my Rogues never make it past there - my clvl36 Rogue *still* cannot do Caves/Normal without death :P

Hi, Elric:

Well this is getting really interesting. B) Exactly how is your clvl 36 Rogue equipped? Is she nude? :o

Hail Sabra,

Not an equipment issue: I have a tactical flaw there. Well, that and I don't really care about death, so I'm quite willing to run head-on into a pack of chargers to fight them toe-to-toe ;) I normally use a Shield to fight, though in Caves and Hell/Hell I use a Windie; her gear can be found on my webpage if you're interested.

Oh, I did get that AMZ through three levels of the caves, though it took me about two weeks and a lot of games, constantly exiting just before death ;)

Elric! You are one fun guy! Just read your character info. and Holy Hannah! I hope that you're on some kind of medication for this condition. ;) Is there a diagnosis yet?

Wow, this looks interesting. I'm currently part of a 3 player (Basin) ironman team, we're about to enter hell. (HELL!!! OMG!!! We rock!!!) We're two warriors (one axe, one S/S) and a rogue who likes to act magey (she knows stone curse). I don't know if I'll have time free to do more ironman stuff, but this that you are organizing here sounds like much fun. =)

Thanks Sabra

The rust will show, but I am tempted enough to give it a try. I will try to catch SoulEdge and get him to give me a review.

I have only played once in three years, and in that game I very carefully took the perfect line of sight on the monsters, stood right behind my companion (so we both got that wonderful line of sight) and started shooting. :o There will be a lot to remember. B)

Hmmm, maybe I'll start a 3-man Ironman! That'll be fun. When not talking to anyone in town, my friend calls that Hardcore Legit Diablo.

IMHO Ironman is more than just "not talking to anyone in town". Your friends probably mean LoL (Living off Land), where you can re-do levels and aren't required to fully clear them. The difficulty difference is huge.

I didn't say it was the same as Ironman. I said when you don't talk to anyone in town, it's hardcore diablo, not ironman.

Hi,

I said when you don't talk to anyone in town, it's hardcore diablo, not ironman.

And how does that differ from LoL (Living off the Land?) which Bostic proposed and many played in '97 or '98?

"Hardcore"? Except as it refers to porn and D2, I have no idea what that means.

I heard the expression on Battle.net a couple of months ago for the first time, and when the person explained it to me, I insisted on calling it LoL. It took me about 15 minutes to prove to that person that it was in fact an old thing with a new name, but I succeeded. Maybe some younger Diablo fans want to leave a mark in the history of the game by making up a "new" style of playing... It probably won't be long before we start seeing NMWs (Non-Magic Warrior), CCCs (Completely Cursed Casters) and similar ultra-new never-before-seen variants roaming Battle.net.

If you ask me, "Hardcore" simply sounds "way c00ler" than LoL. Not one to categorize, but I think it's on the same level as "l337 h4xx0rz" or whatever that's spelled like.

When I hear (or use) the word hardcore in Diablo, it has the same meaning it does in Diablo 2. When a hardcore character dies, you don't play it anymore. I haven't checked up on the Immortal Hero rules lately, but I believe that is closer to a variant than than just your character being mortal.
