The BDs and the FOS shrines aren't that much of a problem in single player since your character will (most likely) never get above level 25 or so and the monsters are wimps. So, you don't need full power to complete (and, yes, I consider the SP game "completable" as opposed to the MP game which is open ended) the game. And since the character is a "one shot", the fact that the character is not "perfect" does not really matter.
Heck, the names escape me, but IIRC there were people who played characters that had lost stats to BDs and FOS up to level 50. It's more of an aesthetic consideration.
However, I do agree that both BDs and FOS were a poor "feature". Had they taken points from vitality and magic, they would have been better.
