The real problem is that there is entirely to much actual evidence pointing in to many directions. And that is what stinks. It's like seeding your trail to throw off the hounds so they can't find you. The very fact that so much actual evidence exists that does seem to point in conflicting directions proves that there is some sort of smoke screen here.

There are smokescreens, and there are smokescreens. :P None of any of what you have presented explains why Ray fled the country, why he confessed, or why a dozen other things. In his defense, as an ex con he was bound to be reluctant to be "caught" but as an ex con, WHY THE HELL WOULD HE CONFESS???
