I was such a worrier about having just such an experience as you describe that I would go a day or two early just to explore the route and time as to not be late for the actual event. This was amplified when it came to job interviews, and remember this was before mapquest and the internet. Now we can just use mapquest, and find the campus map online and discover in advance most of what you need to know.
Based on a Murphy Scale of 1-10 I would call yours a 4. Annoying. A ten is when you are subsequently mugged, have your car stolen, and then end up in jail, in Mexico, on a Friday night.
