Allow me to rip on Texas.

The techniques you describe about shooting grain-fed deer from vehicle platforms are not just in Texas, I am sorry to say.

There is a large island in Georgian Bay called Griffith Island. It was owned at one time by Chrysler Corporation and used as a hunting camp for their executives. (Nice perq's those guys used to get, eh?) Back in the '60's it became a political liability for them, especially since questions were being asked about the members of the legislature who had jurisdiction over some mighty nice tax concessions being given to Chrysler and were frequent 'guests' at the camp.

So they sold it to a private club. :lol: You guessed it - the charter membership of said club included the Premier of Ontario.

Now, my information is dated on this - probably 30 years out of date. My informant was the only butcher in the town closest to the island, who handled the transformation of the dead deer into freezer loads of venison steaks, roasts, etc. for the triumphant 'hunters' to take home. He claimed that they indeed had those lovely vehicles with platforms to ensure that the guests who had flown in from parts far away would be ensured some venison to take home. And, of course, the deer were 'encouraged' to be close to the road by dint of raising crops there that were intended solely for deer forage.

I have no doubt at all that this was the case. The butcher, of course, maintained a very cordial relationship with the members of the hunting club, so as to be able to continue his extra income, so he had many a visit there himself.

I have no idea whether this is still the case. The butcher is dead now and the new local butcher isn't talking about that club, at least not to me. :rolleyes: The more interesting local gossip about the island now revolves around mysterious flights coming into the island airstrip late at night and subsequent dark-of-night deliveries to the mainland dock closest to it. ;)
