I ran D2/LoD and War1/2/3 (and Civ3, and the Myst series, Myth and a bunch more) on a 500 MHz G4 for years. Rock-solid, no graphics lag once I got updated video drivers. Your information is rather incorrect.
On my current dual G5, D2 runs just fine. There's really no difference in gameplay, the G4 was plenty fast enough. Any Mac made recently should do D2 and War3 easily. I'd recommend at least 512MB RAM for any OS X Mac for any purpose, though.
My only beef is that the G5 won't run D1 in Classic mode. :( Just too old I suppose.
And for whatever it's worth, my current box with a Radeon 9600 Pro card works just dandy with World of Warcraft. :P
