I find this really sad
#23
I agree with you completely. The article is sad in many ways. I guess my point was that it could be worse, and maybe for that young man it will. Or, he can get up off his arse and start doing things with his life (and wife, and family as well).

It is perhaps a universal things for parents, for finding the balance between the individual, the family, and the society. For me that balance is between my childrens needs and that of the "family", my wifes needs and of our "marriage", and then my needs as an "individual". If I've been addicted to anything in the past, it would be to work. But, after we started having kids, that has not been a problem. If anything the reverse is true, I've been more guilty of putting off things at work to solve problems at home.

I still feel like I don't get to spend enough time with them. I defer my start time in the morning to 10am, mostly so I have more time in the morning with my children (7-9:30), but I was also able to justify it with my boss, as most of my human interactions are with people in Silicon Valley (2 time zones later from me). That 2+ hours in the morning has been the joy of my life, where my sons and I get to bond playing with thier toys, or reading books, or like this morning, playing in the snow outside.

Most evenings I try to scramble home in time for their 8-9 pm bedtimes, and occaisonally (maybe once a week) we get to have a dinner together. On weekends, I try to spend my time exclusively with my family or doing projects for/with my wife.

My time is after bedtime (my wife and kids go to bed at 8-9pm) and I stay up until 2 or 3am. I've never needed more than 4-6 hours of sleep, so I either work on my "moonlighting" projects, my "mad scientist" projects, or play some games. Once a week (Wed), I gather together a technical group at my office and we either play some games or work on other projects together until the wee hours of the morning.
