That was unfortunately my impression as well. TL2 is a nice step up from TL1, but I found myself autopiloting on veteran difficulty and it got a little boring. There's holdovers from D2 that D3 spoils you on doing away with, and then the combine that with shallower combat. I might even try modding "in" a few D3 mechanics and see if that helps anyway. Have to give props on the "summon a bazillion followers" boss model though, it's more interesting than most of D3's boss events.
I dislike PoE's combat feel even more than TL2, but it does a very nice job on the level-up passives, itemization, and "economy" choices. The draw of progression rewards almost has me overlook the combat.
