I'd considered the "shopping" angle, but I considered it negligible. Anyone willing to bore themself senseless shopping will still be able to do that. I didn't "optimize" the locations for shoppers. Wirt's not standing near game entry point waiting for you to deposit your 50 gold, pull his lever, and watch the jackpot roll by. Wirt and Gillian simply swapped places. That's still a good bit of walking.
