I find it amusing that no one teaches the birds and the bees (not to mention the Muskrats) about 'the birds and the bees', and yet they seem to do fine. As far as I know, humans are the only species that 'need' sex instruction and the only one that has sex based neurosis, taboos, etc.
You never stopped to think what exactly cause the dinosaurs to go extinct? Metors, ice age - come on! Plain and simple some parents followed your advice and got too cocky to teach their kids about the birds and the bees (I assume it was called the Archaeopteryxs and the Kalligrafmatidaes) and they stopped reproducing. Sex ed is fundamental to the continued existance of mankind.
More seriously, if you want to make sure you have the safe sex talk before they discover sex (I personally think it best to have this talk with them before a 14 year old gets pregnant) you will need to explain sex in some manner. Modern humans have some motivations to delay children which other species don't (which may also tie in to the taboos).
