What are your ideas on Dell?
My wife just picked up an Inspiron 1721 for about $650 (US). It's a nice machine, but too big for lots of travel. Big screen, big keyboard which were her criteria for a laptop.

I like Dell, they are well engineered, and service took a dip a few years back, but they are better about it now.
