Burning Down The House
#1
In case anyone was intersted, there is a major fire out behind my house tearing up most of Montecito and Santa Barbara. I watched the flames lick the edge of the mountain ridge last night from myh house. I've already packed clothes for my kids, wife, and myself and backed up my harddrive onto a portable with family pics and the works. Winds down here are strong, gusty, and hot. The Santa Barbara fire cap. said on the news that he sees no possibility of containment anytime today. We will see what happens. This is local news, you might get better news from a major media outlet:

DRI has a very limited supply of masks so please request only what you absolutely need if you cannot avoid outdoor exposure to the smoke generated by the Tea Fire. "These masks are being made available to the public for free," said Dr. Elliot Schulman, Director of the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department.

Schulman said it is critical that the masks be fitted properly on the face, so instruction for proper fitting will be included at the distribution sites listed in the press release.

"It's better to avoid exposure, particularly for those with known lung or breathing problems," said Schulman. "But if you have to be outdoors, especially if you're doing vigorous activity, it is wise to wear a mask to reduce exposure to inhaled wild land fire smoke."

It is the tiny, invisible particles that get into the lungs and can cause problems, he said.

The SB Sheriff's Department is telling all off-duty sworn personnel with the sheriff's department to report to the main station in Goleta in Uniform.

Students from Westmont College have been evacuated to the gym. Officials at the school say students at the gym are safe. Some buildings on campus have been destroyed. Despite this officials say conditions on campus are improving. Parents and students can call the hotline at 1-888-565-7911 for updates.

This morning, 2000 customers are without power.

KCOY CBS-12 Chief Meteorologist Jim Byrne says that winds in the area of the fire have been gusting between 50 and 70 miles per hour. Strong northeast winds are expected to continue through tonight. This has the potential to fan the flames. There is a high wind warning for that specific area through 6am Friday.

The hot dry weather we have been experiencing will continue through at least Saturday.

The fire is being called the Tea fire.

Residents in the area can call the Red Cross Information Line at 2-1-1.
