It's my understanding you can just walk through the Chess room and head on to prince you don't have to play the game. It doesn't control any doors or gates as I understand it.

Look at the door from Chess to Prince next time you walk into Chess. It doesn't open until you beat Chess. You probably didn't notice this because Chess is super easy, but SHam probbably noticed it when he was stealthing around and couldn't get past that door.
