So, while you might be right that "the ability to climb out of poverty are all substantially better for the poor now", it would appear that the ability to sink into poverty has increased even faster.

I'd be interested in any information to the contrary.I didn't feel like spending too much time on this, so I did a simple google on "poverty USA number year": link1, link2, are two of many similar results. I'm sure that with a little effort you could find many more links for world wide poverty. I'd be more interested in seeing data showing that what is being done is actually reducing the depth or width of poverty.
