How is it a reasonable comparison? What exactly is the parallel being drawn here?
To me, it only works if it's a putdown. It's only funny to the extent that it's offensive. And even though I have a friend who participates in the Special Olympics, I still find it mildly funny. But as an actual comparison, I don't see how it holds any water. If you replaced "the Special Olympics" with "a minor league baseball game", would it still make sense?
And of course, the thing about offensive humor is that sooner or later someone will be offended by it.
