The idea of letting a guilty man go free rather than risk an innocent man stay imprisoned once carried the understanding that the wolf was not exactly being let loose among the sheepâ an armed populace learned in self-defense and strong-willed enough to stand against brigandry meant that the unrepentant guilty would likely get their due, one way or another.
