early D1 variant community?

Been doing research into the variant community for the DHP. I've got a lot of information about how the whole thing got started (Woody and Hairy and the BNM), but how and when did the rest of these things come about? Like the barbarian was created as a BNM style for warriors and such. Was the variant play there from the start of D1, or did everything spring up around the time of the BNM?

Going back to my memory archive (which can be fuzzy at times...) first there was the BNM... people liked it so much that then the BNW and BNR were tried by others. This was before the AC bug fix and a warrior could actually make it through Hell\Hell without much to-hit modification. Then other variants just kind of sprang up from various people over the months. Check the old Asylum forum for much history and lore...
