An early sign of aging?

Hey, I'm 26, and I've always been taught to clear spare change in this way. I guess it's part of my upbringing, since my mother has always gotten rid of change in this way.

When I was a kid, I used to work in the family store, and it was fairly common practice. Compare this to my recent bar work, where a lot of customers are willing to buy a £2.30 pint of lager with a £20 note (£17.70 change), no matter how much spare change they've accumulated. Only once was I presented with a note and the change to return a square £3.

Then again, small changing like this is the first step in a pretty common scam I suppose.
When in mortal danger,
When beset by doubt,
Run in little circles,
Wave your arms and shout.

I should try that sometime, tho.:)
