Classes in Diablo 2 - Puma - 06-17-2004

There were 3 classes in D1 (okay, 3 more in HF,but 3 original classes)
Are they the ancestors of the classes in D2,later D2-LOD?
In general, how are the classes in D2 and D2-LOD connected with the classes in D1 and HF?

Well.

The Rogue is connected to the sisters of the sightless eye. That means they are connected to either the Rogues in Act One or the Amazons.

The Warrior is obviously connected to the paladins.

The Sorcerer is connected to the Sorceress they are the same thing just diffrent genders.

Hope that helps

I think Diablo's Rogues can only be Act I Rogues, since Kashya basically says the Amazons aren't a common sight around the Rogue camp. And somehow I find the DII rogue merc and the DI light armor rogue sprites quite similar. Besides, all Amazons seem to have much bigger... eyes ;) than the rogues. Must be a genetic predisposition or something. That, and the AS says they're from someplace else. :P

The Necromancer is connected to Diablo's sorcerer as well: Bone Spirit, Golem (a poor version of Clay Golem), Stone Curse, Elemental (a poor version of Fire Golem).

Hi,

In this spirit:
Quote:The Necromancer is connected to Diablo's sorcerer as well: Bone Spirit, Golem (a poor version of Clay Golem), Stone Curse, Elemental (a poor version of Fire Golem).

The necromancer and also the sorceress are connected to all Diablo characters, because each and all of them could cast these spells. One may also list the paladin (compare his conversion skill to hellfire: berserk or his thorns aura to hellfire: reflect and of course his holy bolt to - well - you already know ;) ) and others, I'm sure.
Perhaps the carrion vine of the druid and the healing spell? A little far fetched, I admit.
Oh yeah: assassin's wake of fire and good old flamewave.

Greetings, Fragbait

Good point. But taking into account that the sorcerer was the best spellcaster around, the rogue was the best at attacking with a bow (even the Moors can't stand up to her), and the warrior was supposed to be the best when it came to melee (although we all know what a rogue can do in melee)... Ehh forget it.

I think the classes in Diablo II can NOT be based on any classes from Diablo, because the games' skill systems are completely different. Sure, 1.10 brought some skills that could be used by non-native classes (everyone can be a zealot, whirlwinding assassins, shapeshifting barbarians and the lot), but it takes more than a handful of gold pieces that it took in Diablo. Or something.

Stop confusing me! :)

There is a great difference between the Diablo 1 sorcerer and the Diablo 2 sorceress.

The Diablo 1 sorcerer is a generic Vizejerai sorcerer. A generalist though his tradition tends to have a focus on elemental magicks. He has not trouble supplementing his elemental core with a few choice necromantics (avoiding all the icky undead stuff), some displacement magic and even a few Zakarumite rites like Healing and the undead-smashing Holy Bolt.

The Diablo 2 sorceress is a member of the secretive Zan Esen order that besides their all-female composition is characterised by their very radical magical specialisation. Allegedly to avoid "demonic corruption" they have chosen to specialise completely in elemental magicks. Severing the links to all other magical disciplines or schools of thought, how useful or innocious they might ever seem. They even went lengths to bend elemental dweomers to simulate some essential spells like Mana Shield and Teleport, in the case of Teleport even improving upon the efficiency of the original.

Nevertheless, if a Sorceress ever had the chance to meet a mage from the Horadric brotherhood's heydays she would undoubtedly find him distastedly "pragmatic".

To say the the Diablo 1 warrior is a paladin is undoubtedly a bit of a stretch. Even though all knightly orders of the west are heavily influenced by the principles of the Zakarum faith not all of them are so singularily devout as to be called fully fledged paladins. Our warrior hero of Diablo 1 could be a fledgeling knight or more likely a freelancer with but a little formal training. He has some aptitude in the holy arts it is merely a scholary addition to a training that is based primarily on regular swordsmanship.

In contrast the Diablo 2 paladin has a training completely devoid of the secular. Every little breath he draws is completely devoted to the sacred principles of Zakarum. His training has more in common with a monk than a warrior and much of his time is spent in prayer and meditation to cleanse his mind of all worldly reminiscenses and let the holy doctrines penetrate his heart.
Even his combat training is not ordinary swordplay, but more like prayers in motion.

The Diablo 1 rogue is indeed a sister of the most enigmatic order of the Sightless Eye. A strange monastic order residing in their own little autonomous region sandwiched between Khanduras and the great Aranoch desert, though they have agents operating over the entire western world (maybe except the Barbarian Heartlands).

Theologically the Sisters of the Sightless Eye is probably a proto-Zakarumite order, based on the principles of Zakarumite faith before it crystalised into the present eastern and western school (of which the eastern were to be so terribly accursed). Even though their central tenets are largely the same they are worlds apart from the Paladins of the west and the Council Zakarumites of the east. Their faith is more introspective and mystical and considerably less dogmatic.

Also their political aims are different from the typical Zakarumites. The Sisters of the Sightless Eye value independency, eschewing all political ties fighting for the Light unfettered by all kings and borders.
All while the "mainstream" Zakarum seems to focus on claiming political power in the name of the Light.

As far as training goes, the Sisters are very pragmatic. Honing their skills in all "acceptable" mystical arts as well as a tradition for archery that probably predates the Rogue order. Indeed much of their training is remarkably similar to that of the Amazon warriors. Though the sisters attribute their mental focus to the mysteries of the true Light while the Amazons base their training on ancient polytheistic rites and legends.

The Rogues that returned from Tristram following the slaying of Diablo were the first to be corrupted by Andariel. One assumes their exposure to the hell-magics within the catacombs made them more susceptible to the demoness' evil.

The Summoner is actually one of the Sorcerers who fought beneath the forsaken temple.

Diablo himself is of course the mighty Warrior.

So the connection between the games is that the Diablo II characters end up killing the Diablo I characters.

The Rogue:
A member of the Sisterhood of the Sightless Eye, the beleagured guardians of the western passes through the Tamoe Mountains into Aranoch. Unrelated to the Amazon, since the Amazon is from the southern islands.

The Warrior:
A soldier of the Army of Khanduras, returning from a failed campaign against Westmarch. He is, in fact, one of the men whom the Paladins of Westmarch were recently at war with. So, the Warrior and the Paladin are in fact secular adversaries, not allies.

The Sorceror:
A mage of the Vizjeri clan. Lut Gholien was built over the ruins of an ancient Vizjeri fort, so the region of Aranoch may be his old haunts. Would have been a subject of interest for the Assassins. The Sorceress is of another mage clan, the Coven of the Zann Esau. Ormus is from another rival clan, the Taan.
