Where do you get your Facts ? - Jim - 03-22-2010 Hi, :) I'm 68 years young and all I can say is "Thank You" Obama & Dems...oh yes one more thing "UP YOURS" to all who voted NO, for Health reform With that said, there will be all kinds of Opinions flying around this forum & the Internet, please get your facts correct some folks believe what they read and never take the time to search for the truth even with Google at their finger tips. The Question is...> Where do you get your FACTS, where do you go to research before you post a reply...what are your favorite sources my favorites folder is in need of more URLs. I like: Politifacts.org Just the Facts [Joe Friday Dragnet] is that a Fact ? Wikipedia Quote:Friday made famous the line "My name is FridayâI'm a cop," (the latter part later changed to "I carry a badge") said in the introductory narration of every TV episode. Supposedly, he also made the line, "Just the facts, ma'am," famous. In fact, what Friday actually said in an early episode is "All we want are the facts." Friday, as portrayed by Webb, never actually said the oft-repeated phrase. Even if I don't agree with him, his empiricism means I usually have a pretty good idea of why. Pollster.com is excellent as a source for opinion numbers and analysis. Factcheck.org is usually fairly good on the raw facts, although they have an annoying habit of adding "balance" to things by counterpoising harmless or debatable "falsehoods" on one side with bald lies on the other, and calling it even. Edit: For a left-leaning, highly opinionated, Berkeley economist's view, replete with lots of links and analysis, J. Bradford DeLong's blog is worth a visit. Be ye warned - this is a lot of opinion to take with your facts, albeit a very interesting set of opinions. (Didn't think I'd post this, but if we've already got Lew freaking Rockwell in here...) For specific issues, there are specific sources, of course. I find Wikipedia to be a generally reliable source of links and raw information, although it is always to be used with caution. -Jester Where do you get your Facts ? - kandrathe - 03-23-2010 Quote:Where do you get your FACTS, where do you go to research before you post a reply...what are your favorite sources my favorites folder is in need of more URLs.I like; http://www.realclearpolitics.com -- Comparison of many polls and political analysis http://online.wsj.com/home-page -- regarding financial items http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/ -- Office of Management and Budget http://www.lewrockwell.com/ -- if you are anti-state, anti-war, and pro free-market http://mises.org/ -- if you are like me and are interested in alternatives to Keynesian economic theory http://www.lexisnexis.com/news/ -- pretty comprehensive source for lots of news sources and also, http://digg.com/ http://chronicle.com -- News about colleges and universities Jester posted 538, which is on my list. http://arstechnica.com/ -- mix of gaming, computer hardware, business, science, etc. http://www.tomshardware.com -- computer hardware... http://www.sciencewatch.com/index.html -- digest of basic research news... http://lp.findlaw.com/ -- look up case laws... http://slashdot.org/ -- that it is so much a reliable source, as it is entertaining... Where do you get your Facts ? - DeeBye - 03-23-2010 I get all my facts from Fox News. They are the only fair and balanced source of news. Where do you get your FACTS, where do you go to research before you post a reply...what are your favorite sources . . .Mostly, I make them up. :whistling: Actually, I balance The New York Times with The Wall Street Journal (both in electronic editions) for the bulk of the general info. I'll often check CNN, especially when things are breaking and I catch AC360 occasionally. I keep up with technology with Science News. For the past few years, I use Wiki as a general resource. And, of course, Google. Of course, 'facts' are slippery things. Sometimes trusted sources let you down -- Colin Powell for example. For many things, you really can't get the facts, only what various (usually warring and disagreeing) ex-spurts claim are facts. --Pete Where do you get your Facts ? - eppie - 03-23-2010 Quote:kandrathe and Jester at the Lurker Lounge. They are the only fair and balanced source of news. The funny thing is that Murdoch in Italy can be seen as a source of unbiased news with his SKY network. Berlusconi owns or leads 90 % of the TV channels and newspapers in Italy, so for anything not Berlusconi biased you have to buy a subscription to Murdoch's channel. Berlusconi of course being a great republican friend again. (I like these contradictory fact loops). Anyway, probably Murdoch is not a neocon, he just wants more money.:) Where do you get your Facts ? - Crusader - 03-23-2010 Quote:I get all my facts from Fox News. I usually try to keep my replies to topics about opinion or facts that are in my area of expertise. Generally I go to pubmed for "facts," although free text is not always avaialble, and it is very NA/EURO focussed. The Cochrane group (Cochrane.org) is well respected, and the papers they commission/accept are generally good, but you often need to be ready to accept that the avaialble evidence is inconclusive.
