I´ve noted some things lately:
When I equip Mindcry(+15 resist all) to my sorcerer who has 70 % on all resistances they all go up to max.
The same happened to my warrior(a ring gave more resistance than it had)
On B.net my character has three dots, although I have just killed Diablo two times.
Seems a little odd..
I have the 1.09 patch installed.

You get one dot for killing Diablo on normal difficulty, two for nightmare, and three for hell. So, if you avoid killing Diablo until you get to hell-hell and then kill him there, you'll go from no dots to three.

Maximum resistance is 75% for any type, at which point MAX will be displayed.
