Anyone know a good source for fans? - --Pete - 03-14-2003

Hi,

I'm sitting here, pretending to work but really reading the lounge and playing solitaire :)

In the background, there's the rumble and whine of two fans going out. When I replace these two, my count will be in the billions (j/k)

Does anyone know of a decent source for computer fans (all types, chassis, power supply, CPU, video card, etc.) that are of high quality?

Otherwise, I'll just go back to SuperTronix and get another half dozen assorted sizes to last me through the next few months.

Thanks,

--Pete

Sure: http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/index.html has a lot of good ones.

Hi,

Thanks for the link. I just checked out the site. Looks like they have a lot of stuff for eye-candy, but I couldn't find any technical specs on their gear.

Since I don't spend much time looking at my computer (especially not the back where the fans live), I really don't much care about blue, green, or red glows. But the noise level of these fans, their CFM rating, and their MTBF are things I am interested in. IMHO, a six buck fan with fifty cents of LEDs does not make a twenty dollar item.

If you've actually used their gear and the fans are high quality (as opposed to looking "cool"), I'd really appreciate the info.

Thanks again,

--Pete

That sounds like an abnormally high rate of fan useage . . .

You might want to consider how things like dust are getting in there in the first place and maybe modify how the PC is ventilated. ;)

Are you looking for HSF's? Or just plain old case fans?

Ive got resources on both, but Im not sure what to give you :)

Hi,

One of the fans going right now is a power supply fan, the other a case fan. I've also had to replace the occasional heat shield fan. So any source of quality fans is welcome.

Heh, not too sure about PS fans, but the site I frequent has a long list of HSF and case fans that should suit some purpose. Only downside is they tend to be high end fans and such, given that this is an overclocking site. I know Ive got some other links somewhere, but I cant remember them off hand.

Ill do some searching and post back. *edit#1* Heh, cant believe that I forgot that second site...Should have everything, and anything you'd ever need. My personal favs are usuall from Swiftech, or Thermaltake. They seem to make the best quality products, though not always at an easy price.

Hi,

For the past few years, we've had seven computers running here. Two are on UPS and run 24/7. The others are used up to 10 hours per day. I've had to replace about three or four fans a year, not an excessive amount but still a bother. Given that the only other maintenance has been to replace one DVD drive, one memory stick, and two BIOS batteries, fan replacement has been my primary hardware problem.

When I have gone into the machines, the accumulation of dust (and cat fur) has not been excessive, so I don't think its much of a air quality problem. Besides, it is the bearings on the fans that go, and they are supposedly sealed anyway.

I used to modify computer cases to add air intake filters. The only effect that seemed to have was a slight reduction of the amount of dust the computers collected but no real difference in the maintenance requirements. I quit bothering about five or six years ago.

Hi,

I've been doing some web searches myself. I was really hoping for more of "I've used this type fan and it works great" type replies, although any links are welcome. Problem is that I can find more info than I'll ever use on motherboards, etc. and hardly any on fans and power supplies. Just not sexy enough, I guess.

Well, from my experience, since its what I use in both my cases, stick with SwifTech. They're quiet, hard working little HSF's, and are some of the best in the game.

For case fans/PS fans, Enermax makes some great PS fans, and Thermaltake make good case fans. I cant recomend individual fans, since there's a huge amout of them out there, and Im not sure what size you'd be using.

From my experience, Enermax fans seem to be big, badass cooling fans at a decent price, usually 12-15 USD. Thermaltake is usually around 12 USD, and a little quieter, but not as much cooling power, when comparing the same size fan. Thermaltake also has all those fancy LED fans, if you're so inclined :)

Hi,

Just the kind of info I was looking for. I'll see if I can find some suppliers for those brands.

Thanks,

...for Enermax and Thermaltake. I don't have personal experience, but I've heard from numerous ITs that they're some of the best. Check out their respective sites for detailed specs.

(Couldn't find a site linking Enermax fans. All they had was cases, power supplies, et al. Sorry.)

(I'd recommend anything in the Volcano series, if you're an Intel user. I only use Intel, so I can't comment on anything else.)
