Recommend me a good Winamp skin - WarLocke - 05-31-2003

The other day I found links to a couple neat songs (Terra's theme from FFVI and the main title from Deus Ex), and tonight I figured I'd make a little playlist with them, since they're both great but I can't stand to listen to the same song over and over -- and I could stick some other stuff in too, as well.

Well, I go to make a playlist, but I can't. Seems like my neanderthalic self never bothered to redownload Winamp after buying this brand new computer over a year ago. I hadn't noticed because I had basically no mp3s until recently; just some music videos I'd run through Windows Media Player.

So, I'm downloading Winamp now and need a cool skin. Recommendations? Links?

Oh, and any idea where I can get "legal" mp3s? I'm not even sure where the line is, in that regard.

www.1001winampskins.com has a lot for winamp 2, but only about 50 for winamp 3. Be sure to click on Winamp 3 Skins under Skin Categories if you want ones that are compatible with winamp 3.

Hello. http://www.winamp.com has plenty of skins. Although you did ask for recommendations, if you do a search for Winamp skins (or something similar), you will find a lot of results.

Most legal music comes with a price, and this is usually the case for downloading such music. Websites such as http://www.mp3.com offer such a service. If you do a search for legal mp3 (or something similar), you will find a lot of results as well. If you feel like trying them out, you might find something that interests you.

As for determining what music is considered legal, here is a webpage that contains related information: http://www2.gvsu.edu/~pontiusd/morals.html

Apple recently released iTunes 4. This is another service where you pay to play (the music), but the service does have a lot of features. It supports the AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) format as well as the mp3 format. To use this software, you must have Mac OS X, and you must meet other requirements. QuickTime 6.2 is recommended.

Here is a link to iTunes: http://www.apple.com/itunes

Thank you for your time. Farewell.

I'd recommend sticking with WinAmp 2 as well. Many people have reported stability problems with WinAmp 3, and it just doesn't feel right to me (but I grew up on WinAmp 2 so ... ;) )

WinAmp 2's a much lighter package and doesn't install too much crud.

Also, if you own CDs, it's perfectly legal to rip them to MP3. Take a look at LAME. Just make sure not to share them with other people.

I highly recommend sticking to Winamp 2. The newly released 2.90 (and 2.91 w/ small bug fixes) added in video support if you care for that (though you can choice to not use it).

I can't find a website for my skin anymore, so ... Preview

Which you can download at: Royo Skin.

Note To Self - Time to instal ACDSee, MSPaint's driving me insane lately.

In Norway it's completely legal to download music from
the Internet, copyright or no copyright. It's just not legal
to distribute it or share it with others..

Personally, I'm using a "Dream Theater - Scenes from a
memory"-winamp-skin, but I can't remember where I got
it from..

Is the loss of function to form. This is a player, and should have all the controls available and understood without having to a.) decipher heiroglyphics or b.) quest needless for the damned buttons.

My favorites are MASSamp_4, Nucleo_Nlog_v102 and zeus_v2_anoxia. All of these are available on the Winamp site; all of them present a nice design, full function, high legibility and good esthetic.

My opinion, of course.

Like Fallout?

Try this on for size

My personal favorite and the one I'd swear by is the one called "Vault-Tec"

It's got all the buttons and just plain looks cool.

If you don't like that...there is a winamp skin at winamp.com called Diablo II-Skilled Warrior which isn't too bad either.

...that was the one I was using before I found the Vault-Tec one.

These are all for Winamp 2 so you're outta luck if you're using Winamp 3.

You're just outta luck in general if you use WA 3. The thing is a steaming pile of disease infested cr@p. Stick with Winamp 2, it actually *works*.

As to skins: I usually use Sonicated 3, but that's a personal choice. Sometimes Cold Fusion or BizarreAmp.

...I don't use my WinAmp (3) for very much, but I do like the Koalla 2 skin off the official site.

The skin I use is called Amber. I got it from DeviantArt and have been using it for close to a year now. Download it here.
