Help with Icons; XP - Taem - 10-16-2003

Hail Lurkers,

I'm having a problem some of you may be able to help me out with dealing with an "icon". I'm trying to change the properties of a folder so it appears with a certian picture, but the picture is .jpeg . I can get the picture to appear on top of a folder, but I view in thumbnail view so I need to actually change the folder to my picture (a very small one, I assure you). How do I convert a .jpeg picture to an icon? What is an Icon? I noticed most files with an .exe extension have Icon files I can select picture from.

I tried the help in XP, but that was so utterly useless, I'd be surprised if the 'help' topics actually helped anyone ;) .

An Icon is a small graphic which is used as the symbolic equivalent of a file. There are "large" and "small" icons, 32x32 and 16x16, respectively.

A lot of applications have icons "in" them, because when they create files, the files will appear with these icons in Windows Explorer, etc.

Icons can also be standalone files, typically with the .ico extension.

If you want to create your own Icon from a graphic, you'll need an Icon editor. Here is a link to what I got when I searched PC World online for "icon" in the Downloads section. Most of the results are libraries of Icons; you may wish to browse a few of these for something that will suit your purposes.

Alternatively, you can use any graphics editor to edit the picture down to 32x32, then use IconForge (it's in the list) to create and save an .ico file from the picture.

Good luck!

Thanks a million :D . The .jpg I was going to use was too small, believe it or not, so I had to basically create my own because it wouldn't let me 'expand' it, but whatever. I got what I wanted. Thanks again for the help.
