"missing Inifuss post"

This morning I posted a bug with the Inifuss quest, and asked if anyone had seen the bug. Now I'm asking if anyone has seen my post? It was here a few hours ago. Is this a forum message bug?

   >...But what is Inifuss?

Inifuss is some fool with a tree that Akara sent me off to find. I am a sorceress, just starting nightmare. I found the tree and noted that it had an aura of magic about it. A scroll dropped from the tree when I touched the bark. I had no room in inventory so I placed the scroll for safe keeping in my horadric cube. When I returned to Akara, she seemed pleased and told me she had translated the runes on the scroll, and that I was to go find the cairn stones and touch them in the order indicated. All well and good for her, but she never gave me back the scroll.

It wasn't in my cube, it wasn't on the ground, and it wasn't back on the wretched tree. (Being a melee sorceress with a naga, I had thought to cut it down and burn it.) When I asked Akara about the quest, she chided me that I could never rescue Cain without finding the tree of Inifuss. She said it was the first step on my journey. Daft old woman. I did not think it would be polite or kind to kick her.

Since there appeared to be no way to rescue Cain, I went on to Lut and found him there. He mumbled something about the rogues finally having freed him, but he then proceeded to try to charge 200 gold for telling me what my items were. Wonder how he'd like to be left out in the desert rather than in Tristram?

Back at the rogue encampment Akara again told me to search for the stupid tree. Charsi at least mentioned that she liked my armor. Same armor that I've had on for thirty levels, not that she might notice. Charsi may be cute, but she's not all that bright.

So far I've repeated this exercise in frustration twice (not counting writing up the bug report a second time). I expect that if I had the scroll in my inventory rather than in my cube, the quest would work. But if Akara has a problem with it in my cube, she should at least leave it there or tell me!

   1. The forum software is burping it's last dying gasps and devouring posts while some posts are going cancerous and oozing great puddles of pus in a forum-wide epidemic of death and decay.

2. If Dopey Cain gets himself rescued by rogues . . .

. . . (God I hate him) then make sure your next Save/Exit is in Act 1. The Tree should drop a scroll, but since you say you've tried that already, try clicking on the Cairn Stones. Once the "runes are translated" you can activate the stones without the scroll open and I'm wondering if that might be the problem. Hit all 5 to see if any activate and repeat if they do.

3. Otherwise, you may have to try joining someone else's multiplayer game to get the quest.

Just to be clear, the tree does drop a new scroll everytime I create a new game. The problem is Akara takes the scroll and does not give it back. She must have a pile of them somewhere. I have not yet tried the cairn stones without the scroll, but I doubt they will be activated, since at that point the quest log shows that I no longer have the quest. In other words as if I had not found the tree in the first place.

I think Akara, Inifuss, and Cain are having a good laugh.

Are you going to Akara with the Scroll in your Cube each time, or have you tried making room for it and carrying it in your regular inventory? If the Scroll starts off in the Cube when you talk to Akara, that might be the cause of the problem. If it's in your inventory when you talk to Akara, well, I'm at a loss. I've never seen the Scroll simply disappear from my inventory.

Not a stupid question. So far I have been taking the scroll to Akara only in my cube. The first time was inadvertent. Then I was trying to make sure the bug was reproducible. Since Akara sometimes seems to be a little slow I was thinking next time to go to Gheed to see if he can read the runes. Not sure I trust him either.

As far as I know, she drops the scroll thing on the ground if it is in your inventory. This sounds a bit like the Alkor scroll/Ormus Ring bug AKK encountered. Full inventory, yet no ring/potion dropped on the ground, and the quest flagged as completed. Might be a realms/character related bug.

In this case though, the quest is not completed. Akara tells me that it is, but if I at once talk to her again, she has forgotten all about it. Senile old woman.

Technical points. When the adjustment to the scroll is made to make it readable, its inventory page is probably adjusted to by your regular inventory and not the cube inventory page. Some what of an oversight on the programmers part in this case.

Non technical note. I frequently will not bother looking at the scroll itself and just go touch the stones until they light up and open the portal. Have you tried to do this anyway? The scroll may actually be "in" your inventory, but in a position that it will not show up or be accessable from. If so, it should still satisfy opening the portal.

she has to get it translated first. when you get it translated the untranslated gets taken away and a translated 1 gets added (thats right its accualy 2 dif items). are you running mh? the newer mh have hide item feature and the scroll might be on the ground just hidden. no you cant go to the stones befor its translated (ive tried befor)
and if its not mh and its not on the ground. then make room for it, get the quest, then tell blizz about it. maybe they dont know about that yet.

If "mh" is "map hack", no, I am not using it.

Akara tells me that she has translated the runes when she takes the scroll. I have not yet tried the experiment of then going to the cairn stones, as Ruvanal suggested. When I get to it I will report back with the results...assuming of course that the thread's still here.

Neither Oothoon, my poor sorceress, nor I are using maphack -- nor are we "he's". If you meant Cain, you can ask him yourself.

I discovered that the bug happens also when the scroll is in my stash as well as in my cube. Not sure how Akara can find the scroll when it is in my "Private" stash, but she may be more clever than I gave her credit...must watch her more carefully.

I did the experiment of going to the stones as soon as Akara told me that the runes were translated. I don't have a cairn fetish, myself, but I touched them in every manner I could think of. Some fellow Rakanishu had a problem. No portal opened either.

As an additional note, after I touched the cairn stones, I still had the quest -- but after I went to Lut to sell some stuff, the quest log told me the cairn quest could not be completed. After that Akara would not talk to me on the subject.

That's right. The game designer's have done that intentionally, because Cain's already there. That's why you need to Save/Exit in Act 1 and start a new game.

I don't have anything to say regarding your bug, but I too has noticed that the NPC's can see the items in my stash. I.e. when talking to Cain about the Jade Figurine in act three, he examined it, then told me to go to Meshif. Meshif went a step further and acctually TOOK the figurine from my stash, even though he was standing 30 yards away from it(Must have very long arms;)) and gave me the golden bird^.^

If I remember right, I also seem to recall that Cain can identify items in my stash, but that might just be me mistaken^^

Still, it seems these NPC's is getting a bit more nosy than what's good for them;)

...at least not according to my experiments. Cain will identify items in the cube as long as the cube is in my inventory or in my stash. I tried leaving the cube out in the desert as well as dropping it in town. In each case the unidentified junk spilled out onto the ground. They just don't make cubes like they used to.

Furthermore, when he deigned to identify the stuff, Cain still charged me 100 gold. The fink.

Technically, I guess you're right, since if the cube is not in a stash or inventory, the unidentified items are no longer in it. Your assertion was misleading though. Although I'm sure quite well intentioned.

If someone else is in the multi player game, and chats with Cain before you rescue him, you don't get to rescue him. You have to try again.

It has gotten to the point that I make private games, once the WP is solved, to just run in and free him to make sure I get it without all the chances that a high level gamer on a Baal or Meph run does not talk to Cain before I get him out of jail.

That gave me an idea. I wonder what would happen if you get into Tristram, and you kill everyone off. Then, you stand in front of Cain's Gibbet, and a person in Lut Gholein or another city talk to Cain, then you try and free him...

Actually, minor correction - if someone else is in the multi-player game, and chats with Cain before you rescue him when that someone else never completed the Cain quest, you don't get to rescue him.

Since B.net is so full of rushers who never bother freeing Cain, that's why you get so many games where you don't even get a shot before someone in Acts 2-5 talks to him. Bleh!

It's also fun when some of the rushers decide to make a cow-game, though forgetting he hasn't saved Cain, making it kinda difficult getting the leg^.^
